The Spirit of Saint Basil: Toy Drive for Saint Basil’s Academy

Updated: Apr 24

Όπως και πέρσι κοντά στα Χριστούγεννα, έτσι και φέτος μαζευτήκαμε ξανά όλοι μαζί για να γλυκάνουμε την ψυχή μας και να ανεβούμε ψυχικά. But this year the Nea Parea community came together in collecting gifts for Saint Basil Academy - a residential institution for children and families located in in Garrison New York and operated by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

There is something especially meaningful about giving in the name of Saint Basil. While many associate gift-giving with Saint Nicholas of Myra (the Greek bishop from Patara known for his quiet generosity and care for the poor) the Greek tradition honors Άγιος Βασίλειος as the giver of gifts on New Year’s Day. His legacy reminds us that giving is not about spectacle, but about humility, compassion, & responsibility toward others.

For us, this toy drive reflects what Nea Parea has come to represent: we gather as young adults, holding joy in one hand and generosity in the other. Over the past year, we’ve learned that this community gathers with heart - and good follows.

The most important Christmas gift is not what is wrapped or waiting beneath a tree, but Christ Himself! A life given in love <3 That love remains with us through the Holy Spirit, drawing us together - and it was felt in a special way at the Christougenna Brunch at Trade in the warmth of companionship, the joy of being together, and the selflessness reflected in every gleaming contribution to the toy drive.

As these gifts reach their homes in the new year, your generosity will bring joy to young Greeks across the diaspora and show them that they are seen, remembered, and deeply loved.

We are endlessly grateful for each of you. Καλά Χριστούγεννα!
